- Occurrence of Ecto- and Endo-mycorrhizae with the Roots of Casuarina Equisetifolia in Various Soil Types

Out ofthe fourteen samples collected from various locations in India, VA-mycorrhizal formation was observed in nine soil samples. External mycelial (ecto-mycorrhizae) association were also recorded in ten samples. Harting net and intercellular mycelial colonization with the ischolar_main under the situation were not observed. In few soil samples plant ischolar_mains were colonized with both endomycorrhizal and ecto-mycorrhizal fungi, whereas in five soil samples only endo-mycorrhiza and in three ecto-mycorrhiza alone was observed. Only in one soil sample no mycorrhizal association was noted study indicate the presence/absence of both type of mycorrhiza forming fungi in the soil. Maximum VAM ischolar_main colonization was observed in Jabalpur soil, indicating the presence of potent VAM fungal species. Higher ecto-mycorrhizal colonization was recorded in Baroda soil sample.

Alternative and traditional medicines, largely herbal in nature, are now regarded as important but underutilized tools against disease. WHO recognized this fact and encouraged governments to effectively utilize local knowledge of herbal medicines for disease prevention and health promotion. Herbal medicines, however, suffer from a range of shortcomings. These include insufficient and unacceptable evidences of safety, efficacy, standardization and inconsistent production practices. There is a growing concern for documentation of research work carried out on traditional medicines needed for regulatory control. With this backdrop, it becomes extremely important to make an effort towards standardization of plant material used for therapeutic purposes. The process of standardization can be achieved by stepwise pharmacognostical, phyto- and physico-chemical studies and minimizing the inherent variation of natural product composition through quality assurance practices. WHO recommends various physicochemical and phyto-chemical evaluation parameters for standardization and quality control of herbal medicinal plants. In view of ethnopharmacological importance of Cichorium intybus Linn, preliminary phyto-chemical screening and quantitative estimation of seed were performed along with morphology and microscopy to establish the salient diagnostic characters. The characteristics evaluated will be helpful for establishing quantitative and qualitative standardization of herbal preparations containing Cichorium intybus seed.Keywords

Blast-induced ground vibration (BIGV) velocities and frequencies are of major concern due to their adverse effects and damage to structures. Therefore, it becomes essential to assess the velocities and frequencies induced by blasting in terms of quantitative and qualitative assessment to overcome the problems. There is a need for scientific studies using devices like triaxial geophone associated with a seismograph to measure the peak particle velocity (PPV) and dominant frequency which cause damage to domestic or residential structures near an opencast mine. Each mine has specific geo-mining conditions, and scientific studies provide appropriate results. In total, 32 number of blasting data sets were recorded at every 50 m from the blast site to the last observation point near the village. Ground vibration associated damage criteria is defined in terms of the PPV at different frequency levels and the strength of the structures under study. The permissible limits of BIGV has been provided by the Directorate General of Mines Safety, Dhanbad, India. The permissible PPV values of the BIGV in India is 2, 5, 10 for the historical and sensitive structures, 5, 10, 15 for domestic houses and 10, 20, 25 for industrial buildings at 25 Hz dominant excitation frequencies respectively. The recorded dataset has been proposed through standard models. The velocity amplitude versus frequency gives a reliable relationship about damage criteria of structures. The structures were analysed vis-à-vis PPV and dominant frequency to correlate the damage possibility. The present study carried out in a mega opencast project provides the basic knowledge to assess the safe distance from blasting site for specific charge of explosive, waves which are responsible for more damage to nearby structures and to determine the correlation coefficient between measured and predicted PPV values.Keywords
